The Study is important not only because it will discuss an electoral system fair and acceptable to all communities living in Sri Lanka, but also show cases the proposals presented by a Consultant of the Foundation to the government of Sri Lanka in 2002. This proposal was presented to the Sri Lankan parliament in June 2002 and has, since then been the basis of discussions on Electoral Reforms in Sri Lanka.
The Synopsis of the Study and a critique of the recommendations of the current parliamentary select committee were presented by CPA’s Dr. Rohan Edrisinha, Constitutional Expert, and Asanga Welikala, Senior Researcher. Hon. Dinesh Gunawardena, M.P. & Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Electoral Reforms outlined the latest conclusions of the committee. Three eminent panelists commented on the proposals and a lively discussion followed with valuable interventions from the audience.
The publication will take into consideration the salient points discussed at this workshop. The Publication will be ready by end May 2008.
