Doing Business in South Asia

The Friedrich-Naumann–Stiftung für die Freiheit together with its partner the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) organized a symposium in New Delhi on the topic “Doing Business in South Asia: Constraints and Impediments”.

The Symposium was organised to identify and highlight the constraints, hindrances and impediments of cross border trade and propose recommendations to overcome these constraints of doing business amongst the South Asian countries. The results will be presented to national governments for creating an enabling environment and facilitating trade within SAARC.

The symposium brought together private sector representatives including businessmen and industrialists and government officials from the South Asian region and provided an opportunity to exchange information, ideas and experiences for the economic development of the region. The symposium held three parallel working groups which discussed the constraints of doing business between the South Asian countries.

As a follow-up, SCCI is planning to organise a Commerce Secretaries Meet in Udaipur, India, in December 2007. The recommendations presented at the Delhi Symposium will be formally presented and shared with the Commerce Secretaries of the SAARC member states for implementation.
