50th Anniversary of Ayn Rand

Barun Mitra, Managing Trustee, Liberty Institute
Rand has connected some highly abstract arguments for libertarianism to reality by building a model of what the ideas would look like if you put them into practice. Atlas Shrugged is not only shocking and inspiring, but it provides millions of readers with arguments to challenge the errors of collectivist government.

Her political philosophy is in the classical liberal tradition, with its emphasis upon individualism, capitalism, the constitutional protection of individual rights to life, liberty, and property, and limited government.
She dramatises the failure of socialism, which she has experienced herself growing up in Russia. At the same time she emphasizes the importance of technological advancement for the advancement of human kind. It is based in individual rationality and creativity – for which you need freedom - and not for example on a five years plan.

In Delhi discussions and the screening of “Ayn Rand speaks for herself (1974)” attracted 50 people. The same night events were held in Bombay and Hyderabad and within the next two weeks three other events in Calcutta (Oct 16), Bangalore (Oct 31) and Patna (Oct 23) are scheduled.
